A Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) order is put in place in medical settings when a patient and their family decide that they do not want to receive CPR if their heart stops.
It is important to note that a DNR order does not mean “do not treat.”
One way to alert healthcare workers to a DNR status is to wear a medical ID engraved with the DNR status. Here’s a quick rundown on how to pick the right medical ID for you.
Selecting the Bracelet
At American Medical ID, a wide variety of medical IDs are available to suit everyone’s taste. They are organized into easy-to-navigate subcategories for men, women, and children, as well as fine jewelry and under $25 ids for people on a budget. A watch slide can be added to a watch band, minimizing the amount of jewelry that needs to be worn.
Digital IDs are available through My Interactive Health Record to offer a more comprehensive record than can fit onto a standard engraved ID.
The Engraving Process
The engraving process is completely customizable. Our friendly customer service staff can help you to determine what information needs to be included on your medical ID —whether it’s just the DNR status or other relevant medical conditions or emergency contact information. We are easily reachable via phone or online chat at no extra charge!
The DNR Process in Healthcare Facilities
An advance directive indicating the DNR status also needs to be on file with the healthcare facility for it to be recognized. Simply wearing a medical ID stating a DNR status is not enough to legally prevent healthcare professionals from performing CPR.
However, wearing such an ID lets everyone know that their code status needs to be verified as soon as possible.
DNR status can temporarily be lifted if the patient needs to undergo a surgical procedure after discussion with the patient’s surgeon and anesthesiologist and reinstated immediately after the procedure.
